Dallas – Fort Worth – DFW Area School Closings

The list updates with each new closure added. If you have to go to work or school, despite potentially dangerous road conditions, please drive with caution. Leave plenty of room between your car and the car in front of you if the roads are wet or potentially icy.

Current List of Closed or Delayed Schools/Businesses

Note: We are expecting schools to be closed or delayed on Monday but Friday many seem to be open.

Most Dallas-area schools plan to remain open Friday, Jan. 23, but have canceled after-school and weekend activities as a major winter storm brings ice, sleet, snow, and dangerous travel into the weekend.

Forecast and travel impacts

  • A Winter Storm Warning covers most of North Texas from Friday evening through Sunday, with an Extreme Cold Warning Saturday night through Monday; sleet and snow could keep roads hazardous into Monday.

  • Dallas officials and TxDOT are urging residents to “stay home” through the weekend due to expected icy bridges, overpasses, and black ice, with the city’s Emergency Operations Center activating Saturday morning.

Dallas ISD and major DFW school districts

  • Dallas ISD:

    • Schools are expected to open on time Friday, Jan. 23, with buses on regular schedules.

    • All after-school activities, programs, and athletic events are canceled Friday and throughout the weekend; any further changes (delays/closures) will be pushed by phone/text, website, app, and social channels.

  • Other highlighted districts (policy/stance as of Thursday evening):

    • Richardson ISD – Monitoring conditions; will announce delays/closures via automated calls, email/text, and the district website, usually by early morning.

    • Arlington ISD – Currently planning to stay open; superintendent will decide based on road conditions, ice/snow accumulation, and forecasts.

    • DeSoto ISD / Mesquite ISD / Fort Worth ISD / Grand Prairie ISD – Monitoring the storm with safety as the priority; no blanket Friday closures announced yet, but high school games and extracurriculars are being moved or canceled.

  • Frisco ISD: Canceled after-school activities Friday and Saturday and will use email/text and social media for any late-breaking school closures or delays.

Colleges and universities

  • TCU, SMU, UNT, and Dallas College currently expect to hold Friday classes but are monitoring conditions closely and have warned that winter weather could force rapid shifts to delays, online options, or closures.

  • Baylor has issued a campus winter weather/extreme cold update and is coordinating operations and communications around the same broader storm system affecting North Texas travel.

Weekend activities, churches, and businesses

  • Across DFW, non-essential weekend activities tied to schools (tournaments, fine arts events, practices) are widely canceled or rescheduled because of the expected icing and prolonged subfreezing temps.

  • Churches and faith-based organizations in Dallas are heavily involved in warming-shelter operations; many are expected to move services online, consolidate schedules, or cancel smaller gatherings on Sunday depending on road conditions and power reliability.

  • City guidance and business coverage indicate many restaurants, small retail, salons, and entertainment venues will either close or run limited hours Saturday–Sunday, while big-box and groceries aim to open with possible reduced hours and location-by-location decisions.

How to check for specific closings

  • Families should:

    • Watch district robocalls/texts, websites, and apps for Friday morning updates and any Monday decisions if ice and outages persist.

    • Assume hazardous travel from late Friday night through at least Sunday morning and plan for the possibility of additional school closures or delays if power issues and icy roads linger into the new week.

No closings reported.
